Ben Affleck’s new film Live By Night, the Frank Grillo headlined thriller The Crash, the Morgan Spurlock documentary Rats, and another Affleck flick (The Accountant) are discussed on this week’s CinemAddicts.
The Crash centers on Guy Clifton (Frank Grillo), a soon to be jailed stock trader who is tasked by the government to stop a cyber-attack that is set to crash the U.S. stock markets. Guy assembles his crack team of techies (Dianna Agron, John Leguizamo, Ed Westwick) to help him on his mission. Minnie Driver is Guy’s wife and AnnaSophia Robb is his cancer stricken daughter.
I gave The Crash three stars, as simply watching a thriller headlined by Grillo already gets me halfway there. Throw in a bevy of character actors that I love and I’m all in. The movie, running at 84 minutes, has its share of flaws (the breakneck pacing wasn’t my cup of tea), but I’d recommend it if you love checking out the aforementioned actors do their thing. Christopher McDonald, who’s played his share of bad guys, also delivers the goods in his respective role. Anderson ended up giving it one star.
Live By Night also has its share of flaws, and though the story about the rise of a vengeful and resourceful criminal (Ben Affleck) during the Prohibition Era sounds great, the picture fails to land the knockout punch. Affleck’s chemistry with co-stars Sienna Miller and Zoe Saldana are non-existent (Saldana’s role is also under-cooked). That being said, the film is absolutely stunning to look at, and if you’re in the mood for a Tommy gun shoot outs and a top notch car chase sequence, then Live By Night may be worth a matinee ticket.
Anderson’s streaming pick of the week is the Morgan Spurlock directed documentary Rats. He absolutely loves this movie, but just hearing the description makes me want to throw up. I’ll probably get to this movie later than sooner as I’m not a huge fan of vermin.
***Note – as I’m writing this, I’m listening to Anderson’s review of Rats on the show – I have no idea how and why I wasn’t transfixed from the review while taping the program! I’m definitely seeing this movie !!
Anderson also puts my feet to the fire for my Blu-ray pick of the week – The Accountant. I really hope I’m not in the minority here, but this is one of my favorite Ben Affleck performances (it’s right up there with Changing Lanes and The Town). I tried to give this movie as high of a recommendation as possible on the show, but Anderson is still not having any of it!
