Alexander Nevsky & Kristanna Loken in "Black Rose"

CinemAddicts Ep. 69: ‘Black Rose’ & ‘How To Be A Latin Lover’

“Black Rose” and “How To Be A Latin Lover” are the movies covered on this week’s CinemAddicts. Details on the program, as well as how we’ll be changing up the program is below!

Kristanna Loken & Alexande Nevsky in "Black Rose"
Watch out for the “Black Rose” – it’s coming at ya on VOD and DVD May 2nd!! It’s in theaters April 28th (much to Anderson’s proclamations!)

First off, I love all those Schwarzenegger and Stallone (and don’t forget Chuck Norris!) action movies from the 1980s, and if you’re also a fan of that genre, then Black Rose should be up your alley. Alexander Nevsky directs and stars as a Russian lawman who is transferred to Los Angeles and tasked with catching a serial killer. Kristanna Loken (“Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines”) and the ever dependable Robert Davi (Profiler, Licence to Kill) and Adran Paul (“Highlander”) co-star in the film. A blend of mystery and action, “Black Rose” brings a throwback style to the proceedings, and I really loved its no holds barred approach to its storytelling (it’s hard to find movies like Black Rose in today’s PC climate). I gave the film three and a half stars, and though I always sound I’m half joking on the program, I really enjoyed the film.

Three stars goes to How To Be A Latin Lover, the story of a gigolo named Maximo (Eugenio Derbez) who shacks up with his estranged sister (Salma Hayek) and nephew (Raphel Alejandro) after his elderly wife leaves him. Raquel Welch co-stars as the new woman whom Maximo attempts to seduce, with Rob Lowe playing Maximo’s best bud and fellow gigolo. Directed by Ken Marino, the picture features a healthy share of funny cameos (Rob Corddry, Kristen Bell, Michael Cera). Hayek and Derbez also have an easy chemistry as the siblings, and overall it’s a fun comedy that’s worth catching when it hits streaming and Blu-ray (or catch it during bargain matinee times!).

Lastly, Anderson Cowan, the captain my captain (Dead Poets Society reference!!) of CinemAddicts, throws down the future direction of the show. We’ll be taping the show once a month and previewing a slew of movies we’re looking forward to seeing. Plus we’ll throw in a few movie reviews or two on these monthly episodes.

Although one episodes doesn’t beat four, we’ll make sure to keep CinemAddicts alive during the ensuing month via this Giveaways, our Facebook page, and this website. We are still alive folks – and thanks so much for your continued support in keeping us afloat!!

Please comment below on our show (if you have any insights/advice) and if you have any movie recommendations always throw some over our way. Have a great weekend fellow CinemAddicts – we love you all and make sure you support your local Araber!!
